Ocean Prep (Kayaking Level 2)

Ocean Prep is designed for anyone looking to improve their kayaking skills beyond the introductory level, even if you don't plan to paddle on the ocean. This three-hour class consists of three parts: strokes development and maneuvering, bracing, and rescues.
Learn critical safety skills like rescues in our Ocean Prep.
During the first portion we will extend your knowledge of an efficient forward stroke, sweep strokes for turning, and boat lean for maneuvering.
The second portion covers the use of paddle braces. You'll learn how to use your paddle to improve your stability and help prevent a capsize. Good bracing skills help to prevent capsizes, thereby allowing you to paddle with more confidence in a wider variety of conditions.
The final portion of the class covers rescues and capsize-recovery techniques. If you or a partner does capsize, the ability to quickly execute a wide variety of re-entries is critical for safety. Because of their value and importance, all kayakers should know and regularly practice these skills. Therefore, we designed this clinic to provide plenty of opportunity for individual practice.
Ocean Prep is a perfect preparation for those who wish to take our Ocean Skills trips or other Level 2 sea kayaking trips. The clinic is held at our Newton Boathouse.

Ocean Prep is the second step of our
Recommended Progression for Aspiring Sea Kayakers.
Ocean Prep is designed for those with some paddling experience who are looking for a thorough review and in-water practice of bracing, assisted re-entries, and self-rescues. While our Introduction to Kayaking or similar class is recommended, it is not required — anyone who has taken no formal paddling instruction will benefit from this class.
For those who have never done a wet exit, you may also consider our 1.5-hour Basic Rescue Class focused solely on the wet exit and assisted rescue.
Ocean Prep meets for one 3-hour session at our Newton Boathouse.
$75 includes three hours of instruction, complimentary use of a plastic sea kayak, one week of unlimited on-site practice time at any of our locations, and borrowing privileges from our video library.
Formal Introductory Instruction Recommended
We recommend, but do not require, that students take our Introduction to Kayaking, Introductory Trip, or private lesson before participating in our Ocean Prep.
If you are not comfortable performing intermediate skills like sweep strokes, boat lean, braces, assisted rescues, and self-rescues, you'll be shocked by how much your skills improve by taking our Intro. to Kayaking course or its equivalent. While the name says "Introduction," this course covers many intermediate and advanced skills and will greatly benefit anyone who has never had formal instruction. We guarantee it! If you have questions, please contact us.
Be Prepared to Wet Exit
Students who have not performed a wet exit may sign up for our Ocean Prep but should understand that the purpose of the class is to practice rescues and other skills that involve wet-exiting the kayak. Our instructors will teach and demonstrate the proper procedures, if necessary. If you have questions, please contact us.
